Homemade Laundry Detergent

Aside from coupon clipping I have been trying hard to find ways to save money. A friend had told me that she found a recipe to make her own laundry detergent. So I did my own little bit of research and found a recipe and made my own laundry detergent! It actually turned out to work really well! Better than the stuff I was using before! So I thought I would share!

HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT

2 cups of grated Ivory soap
2 cups of washing soda
2 cups of borax

Boil 1 quart of water and put the 2 cups of grated Ivory soap in the water. Boil on low heat until soap is melted. Pour into a large container (it has to be big enough to hold 2 gallons of water easily) and add the washing soda and borax. Stir and add 2 gallons of hot water and mix together!
I kept my old container of laundry detergent and poured half of it into the container and stored the other half. Every time you go to use it you need to shake it up really good or re-stir it because it does kind of gel up.
Use 1/4-1/2 cup per load of laundry

The borax, washing soda, and ivory soap can all be found at Winco. The borax and washing soda are all natural, but I'm not too sure about the ivory soap.

Cost:
Borax @ Winco $3.32
Arm & Hammer Washing Soda @ Winco $2.67
6 pack of Ivory Soap @ Winco $2.14
Total w/tax = $8.62

These ingredients should make around 4-6 batches (I haven't quite done the math yet) Which would give you around 8-12 gallons of laundry detergent for just $8.62. Now you tell me, are we saving money?

I am so excited about this everyone should try it! It only takes around 15 minutes from start to finish and it is well worth the money saved! If you try this please let me know what you think or if you have any questions please ask!

Next on my list of things to try:

1) Homemade freezer jam
2) Homemade cleaning products
3) Homemade dishwasher detergent and jet dry

I will tell you all about it as I try these out!
